Intercepted House
Definition
An intercepted house is a house that contains an entire zodiac sign without that sign appearing on either house cusp. More precisely, astrologers usually call the enclosed sign an intercepted sign. Interceptions occur in unequal house systems, such as Placidus, especially for charts cast at higher latitudes. They do not occur in equal-house or whole-sign systems.
Astrological Meaning
In modern natal astrology, an intercepted sign may describe qualities that are present but less direct, visible, or readily expressed. The house shows the life area in which those qualities may require greater awareness or deliberate development. Interpretation should include the intercepted sign, its planetary ruler, any planets inside the interception, and their aspects. Because interceptions also produce duplicated signs on other cusps, those repeated signs may reveal connected areas of experience. An interception does not mean that a sign, planet, or house is blocked permanently.
Why It Matters
Intercepted houses add nuance to chart interpretation, but their importance depends on the chosen house system. Comparing the chart with an equal-house or whole-sign version can clarify whether an interpretation reflects a meaningful personal pattern or a technical feature of house division. Transits and progressions involving the intercepted sign, its ruler, or planets within it may coincide with periods when its themes become more noticeable.
