House, intercepted
Definition
An intercepted house is a house that contains an entire zodiac sign without that sign appearing on either adjoining house cusp. More precisely, astrologers usually call the enclosed sign an intercepted sign. This pattern occurs in some unequal-house systems, especially at higher latitudes, and is accompanied by another pair of signs appearing on two consecutive cusps. It does not occur in equal-house or whole-sign systems.
Astrological Meaning
The enclosed sign is often interpreted as operating less directly or requiring deliberate development within the topics of its containing house. Its planetary ruler, any planets in the intercepted sign, and aspects to those planets show how its qualities may find expression. The repeated signs on neighboring cusps may describe themes that are more immediately visible or used across multiple areas of life. Interception does not make a sign, planet, or house powerless; it adds a structural nuance to the chart.
Why It Matters
Recognizing an interception can refine house interpretation by showing where a person may need time, awareness, or suitable circumstances to express particular traits. Because interceptions depend on an accurate birth time and the selected house system, they should not be judged in isolation.
