Intercepted

Definition

Intercepted describes a zodiac sign that lies entirely within an astrological house without appearing on either of that house’s cusps. Because interceptions occur across an axis, the opposite sign is also intercepted. Two other signs are then repeated, or duplicated, on house cusps. This arrangement occurs only in certain unequal house systems; equal-house and whole-sign systems do not produce interceptions.

Astrological Meaning

Astrologers often interpret an intercepted sign as operating less visibly or directly than a sign placed on a house cusp. Its qualities may be experienced inwardly, developed gradually, or expressed when circumstances activate the containing house. A planet in an intercepted sign is called an intercepted planet, but it is not necessarily weakened or blocked. Its sign, house, aspects, condition, and ruling planet remain essential. The duplicated cusp signs may describe themes that connect two areas of life or receive added emphasis, although interpretive approaches vary among astrological traditions.

Why It Matters

Recognizing an interception helps clarify why a chart may contain houses spanning three signs and why some signs do not rule a cusp. It also encourages careful attention to house-system choice and birth-time accuracy. Comparing the same chart in another house system can show which observations are structurally dependent rather than universal, supporting a more balanced interpretation.
