Topocentric Houses are a quadrant house system used to divide an astrological chart into twelve houses. Developed by astrologers Wendel Polich and A. Page Nelson, the method calculates intermediate house cusps from the observer’s geographic location, using distinct reference poles. Its cusps often resemble those produced by the Placidus system, although the two systems use different calculations and can produce meaningful differences.

Astrological Meaning

In a natal chart, Topocentric Houses determine which areas of life are associated with planets and other chart points. They do not change a planet’s zodiac sign or its aspects; they may change its house placement, especially when it lies near a cusp. Astrologers who use this system interpret the Ascendant and Midheaven as major angles, then read the remaining cusps as boundaries between topics such as resources, relationships, vocation, and community. Some practitioners also apply Topocentric cusps in transits, progressions, and other predictive techniques, watching for contacts to house cusps without treating them as certain events.
