Alcabitius Houses
Definition
Alcabitius Houses are the twelve divisions of an astrological chart produced by the Alcabitius house system, a quadrant method widely used in medieval astrology. The Ascendant and Midheaven establish the principal angles, while intermediate cusps are calculated by dividing the relevant diurnal and nocturnal semi-arcs into three equal portions and projecting those divisions onto the ecliptic. Houses can therefore vary considerably in size.
Astrological Meaning
Interpretation follows the standard symbolism of the houses: each house describes a sphere of life, while planets placed there indicate functions or experiences emphasized within that sphere. Alcabitius changes cusp positions rather than the essential meanings of planets, signs, aspects, or houses. Compared with another system, a planet near a cusp may move into an adjacent house, potentially shifting the practical context of its interpretation. The system may be used in natal, horary, electional, and predictive astrology, especially by astrologers interested in traditional techniques.
Why It Matters
House-system choice can materially affect chart interpretation, particularly at high latitudes or when planets lie close to cusps. Studying Alcabitius Houses helps astrologers compare historical and modern approaches without assuming that one framework is universally correct. Consistency is important: use one system carefully, note borderline placements, and judge whether its results form a coherent reading when considered alongside signs, planetary condition, rulerships, and aspects.
