Meridian Houses

Definition

Meridian Houses are the twelve sectors created by the Meridian, or Axial Rotation, house system. This method divides the celestial equator into twelve equal 30-degree sections and projects those divisions onto the ecliptic through circles passing through the celestial poles. The Midheaven and Imum Coeli form the tenth- and fourth-house cusps, while the first-house cusp is based on the equatorial Ascendant, often called the East Point, rather than the ordinary Ascendant.

Astrological Meaning

In interpretation, Meridian Houses organize planets according to their relationship with Earth’s daily rotation. Planets near the Midheaven may receive particular emphasis in matters of public activity, direction, reputation, or visible contribution, while those near the Imum Coeli can describe private foundations and inner life. Because the Ascendant may fall within the first house instead of marking its cusp, this system separates personal presentation from the structural beginning of the house sequence. Signs and planetary aspects do not change; only house placement may differ from systems such as Placidus or Whole Sign Houses.
