Semi-Quintil

Definition

The Semi-Quintil, more commonly called the semi-quintile or decile, is a minor astrological aspect formed when two planets or chart points are approximately 36 degrees apart. It is half of a quintile and belongs to the fifth-harmonic family of aspects. Because it is subtle, astrologers generally use a narrow orb, often no more than one or two degrees.

Astrological Meaning

In chart interpretation, the Semi-Quintil may suggest a quiet capacity for arranging, refining, or creatively combining the functions of the planets involved. Its fifth-harmonic character is often associated with skill, ingenuity, pattern recognition, and the deliberate shaping of raw potential. The planets, signs, houses, and exactness of the aspect determine how readily this quality is expressed. Unlike a conjunction or square, it may not dominate the chart; its influence can emerge through specialized interests, practiced talents, or inventive responses to particular situations.

Why It Matters

The Semi-Quintil can add nuance when a chart contains repeated quintiles, biquintiles, or other fifth-harmonic contacts. It may help identify abilities that are less obvious than those shown by major aspects. However, it is best interpreted as supporting evidence rather than as a stand-alone indicator. Examining the whole natal chart helps distinguish a meaningful pattern from an isolated minor aspect.
