A semicircle is one half of a circle, covering 180 degrees. In astrology, the term usually describes either half of the horoscope wheel. The horizon divides the chart into upper and lower semicircles, while the meridian divides it into eastern and western semicircles. It can also refer more generally to the arc between two opposite points.
Semicircles help astrologers assess planetary distribution. Emphasis above the horizon is often associated with public, social, or outwardly visible concerns, while emphasis below it may suggest a more private or inward orientation. An eastern emphasis can indicate greater self-direction; a western emphasis may highlight responsiveness to other people and circumstances. These are broad interpretive tendencies, and their significance depends on the planets, houses, angles, and chart system involved. A 180-degree aspect is specifically called an opposition rather than merely a semicircle.
Recognizing semicircle emphasis provides a quick overview of how a natal chart’s energy is organized. It can reveal whether most planets occupy one hemisphere and help place individual house or aspect interpretations within a wider pattern. Because one planet near an angle may carry exceptional weight, astrologers usually consider prominence and condition rather than relying only on a simple planetary count.
