Stations, in retrograde

Definition

A station in retrograde occurs when a planet appears nearly motionless from Earth just before beginning its apparent backward movement through the zodiac. The planet does not physically reverse direction; the effect results from the changing orbital relationship between Earth and that planet. Ephemerides usually mark the precise station, although astrologers may also consider a broader period of unusually slow motion.

Astrological Meaning

Astrologers often interpret a station as a concentration or intensification of a planet’s symbolism. When the planet stations retrograde, its usual functions may become less straightforward, prompting review, delay, revision, or a change of approach. In a natal chart, a stationing planet may be especially prominent in the person’s temperament or life themes. In transit work, it can prolong the planet’s contact with a natal planet, angle, or sensitive degree. Interpretation depends on the planet involved, its sign, house, aspects, and condition; traditional and modern schools may weigh retrogradation differently.

Why It Matters

Recognizing a retrograde station helps clarify timing and emphasis. Events or concerns associated with the planet may develop gradually, repeat, or require reconsideration rather than moving directly forward. Because a slow planet can remain near one degree for an extended period, its aspects may feel more sustained than those made at normal speed. A station is therefore best read within the complete chart, not treated as an isolated promise of difficulty or reversal.
