Shadow Period

Definition

A shadow period is the span before and after a planet’s apparent retrograde motion when it travels through the same degrees covered by the retrograde. The pre-retrograde shadow begins when the planet first crosses the degree where it will later station direct. The post-retrograde shadow ends when the planet passes the degree where it originally stationed retrograde. Shadow periods are most often discussed in relation to Mercury, Venus, and Mars.

Astrological Meaning

Astrologers treat the pre-shadow as an introductory phase in which themes associated with the coming retrograde may begin to emerge. The retrograde itself is commonly interpreted as a time of review, revision, delay, or inward focus. During the post-shadow, circumstances may be reconsidered again, unresolved details may become clearer, or earlier decisions may be adjusted. Interpretation depends on the planet involved, the zodiac signs and houses it crosses, and any aspects it makes to natal planets or angles.
