Swift in Motion

Definition

Swift in motion is a traditional astrological condition describing a planet that is traveling through the zodiac faster than its average daily speed. Astrologers determine it by comparing the planet’s current motion with its customary mean motion. The term concerns apparent geocentric speed, not the planet’s physical velocity through space.

Astrological Meaning

In classical interpretation, swiftness is generally considered an accidental dignity because it suggests readiness, momentum, and an ability to produce results promptly. A swift planet may express its symbolism with greater urgency or efficiency than a slow one. Its actual quality still depends on other factors, including sign, house, aspects, sect, retrogradation, and proximity to the Sun. Speed does not erase essential debility or difficult configurations; it describes how actively the planet operates rather than whether its purposes are favorable.

Why It Matters

Evaluating planetary speed adds useful nuance to natal, horary, and electional charts. It can help an astrologer judge whether a significator appears vigorous and able to advance a matter or whether developments may unfold more slowly. Swift motion should be weighed alongside the planet’s complete condition, especially direction, dignity, house placement, and applying or separating aspects, rather than treated as a prediction by itself.
