Definition

The Moon's nodes are the two points where the Moon's orbital path crosses the ecliptic, the apparent path of the Sun around Earth. The ascending intersection is called the North Node, while the descending intersection is the South Node. They are calculated points rather than physical bodies and are commonly shown as moving backward through the zodiac.

Astrological Meaning

Astrologers interpret the nodal axis as a symbolic relationship between familiar patterns and developing qualities. In many modern approaches, the South Node describes ingrained tendencies, established abilities, or comfortable responses, while the North Node suggests experiences that encourage growth and greater balance. Their signs indicate the qualities involved, and their houses show the life areas where these themes may emerge. Aspects from planets can modify how the nodal pattern is expressed. Traditional Indian astrology treats the nodes as Rahu and Ketu, with distinct meanings and considerable interpretive importance.

Why It Matters

The nodes help connect personal chart interpretation with eclipse cycles, because eclipses occur when a New Moon or Full Moon forms near the nodal axis. In a natal chart, they can provide a useful framework for examining habits, tensions, and possible directions of development. Interpretations are strongest when considered alongside the chart ruler, planets, houses, aspects, and the person's lived circumstances.
