South Node

Definition

The South Node is the point where the Moon’s orbit crosses the ecliptic while moving southward. Opposite the North Node by sign and house, it forms one half of the lunar nodal axis. It is a calculated point rather than a physical celestial body and may be shown as the true or mean node in a chart.

Astrological Meaning

In a natal chart, the South Node is commonly associated with familiar patterns, established abilities, inherited tendencies, and responses that require little conscious effort. Its sign describes the style of these habits, while its house indicates the life area where they may appear. Aspects from planets add further detail. Modern evolutionary and karmic approaches sometimes connect it with past-life themes, although it can also be interpreted psychologically as conditioning or ingrained experience. Its opposite point, the North Node, suggests qualities that may provide balance and development. Neither node is inherently fortunate or unfortunate.
