Node, and the South or descending Node

Definition

The lunar nodes are the two points where the Moon’s orbit intersects the ecliptic, the apparent path of the Sun. The South Node, also called the descending node or Dragon’s Tail, is where the Moon crosses from north to south of the ecliptic. It always stands opposite the North Node and is calculated as either a mean or true position.

Astrological Meaning

In natal astrology, the South Node is commonly associated with familiar responses, established abilities, inherited patterns, and experiences that feel instinctive or well practiced. Its sign suggests the style of these tendencies, while its house indicates the life area in which they may be most noticeable. Aspects from planets modify how the South Node is expressed. Traditional astrology sometimes treated it as a point of decrease, release, separation, or weakened material emphasis. Modern evolutionary approaches often contrast its familiarity with the developmental direction symbolized by the North Node. Neither node is best interpreted alone or as inherently fortunate or unfortunate.
