Node

Definition

A node is a calculated point where the orbit of one celestial body intersects a reference plane, usually the ecliptic. Astrology most often refers to the Moon’s ascending North Node and descending South Node. These points are always opposite each other and are associated with eclipses when the Sun and Moon align nearby. Charts may use either mean or true node calculations.

Astrological Meaning

The lunar nodes are commonly interpreted as a developmental axis. The South Node can describe familiar tendencies, established abilities, or patterns that feel easy to repeat, while the North Node suggests qualities and experiences that may invite growth. Their signs show the style of this polarity, and their houses identify the life areas in which it may become noticeable. Aspects from planets add further detail. Other planetary nodes also exist, although they are used less often and may receive different emphasis across astrological traditions.

Why It Matters

Nodes help astrologers interpret direction, contrast, and recurring themes without treating the chart as fixed destiny. They are especially relevant in natal analysis, eclipse work, transits, and relationship comparison. Because a node is not a physical planet, its meaning depends heavily on context, including its sign, house, aspects, calculation method, and the interpretive approach being used.
