Lunar Nodes

Definition

The Lunar Nodes are the two points where the Moon’s orbital path crosses the ecliptic, the Sun’s apparent path through the zodiac. The North Node marks the ascending intersection, while the South Node marks the descending intersection. They are calculated points rather than physical celestial bodies and always occupy opposite signs and houses.

Astrological Meaning

In a natal chart, the North Node is commonly associated with unfamiliar qualities, experiences, and directions that may encourage development. The South Node often describes established tendencies, familiar abilities, or patterns that can become limiting when overused. Their signs suggest the qualities involved, while their houses identify the life areas where the nodal axis may be expressed. Aspects from planets can add further context. In predictive astrology, transits to the nodes—or transiting nodes contacting natal placements—may coincide with periods of redirection, connection, or heightened awareness, but they do not guarantee specific events.

Why It Matters

Interpreting both nodes as one axis creates a more balanced picture than treating either point in isolation. The South Node can represent useful experience rather than something to reject, while the North Node may indicate a direction to explore rather than a fixed destiny. The Lunar Nodes also help connect natal interpretation with eclipses, since eclipses occur near the nodal axis.
