Definition
In astrology, a chart is a symbolic map of the sky calculated for a specific time and place. Usually drawn as a circle divided into twelve houses, it records the positions of the Sun, Moon, planets, angles, and other selected points within the zodiac. Common types include natal, event, horary, electional, and mundane charts.
Astrological Meaning
A chart provides the framework for astrological interpretation. Astrologers examine zodiac signs to describe how planetary energies may be expressed, houses to identify areas of life, and aspects to explore relationships among planets. The Ascendant, Midheaven, planetary condition, and house rulerships can add further detail. Interpretation depends on the chart’s purpose: a natal chart concerns an individual’s birth, while an event chart describes the symbolic pattern surrounding a particular occurrence.
Why It Matters
The chart matters because astrology interprets an interconnected pattern rather than isolated placements. A planet’s meaning can change according to its sign, house, aspects, motion, and rulership. Reading the whole chart helps prevent overly broad conclusions and supports a more balanced view of tendencies, tensions, resources, and timing. Different astrological traditions may calculate or emphasize certain features differently, so method and context remain important.
