Geocentric Chart

Definition

A geocentric chart is an astrological chart calculated from an Earth-centered point of view. It maps the apparent positions of the Sun, Moon, planets, and other chart factors as observed from Earth at a particular time and, when relevant, place. Most natal, transit, electional, and mundane charts used in Western astrology are geocentric unless another reference frame is specified.

Astrological Meaning

Astrologically, the geocentric model emphasizes human experience from an earthly perspective. Planetary positions are interpreted by zodiac sign, house, aspect, and relationship to chart angles such as the Ascendant and Midheaven. Geocentric calculation is separate from the choice of tropical or sidereal zodiac and from the selected house system; either zodiac can use an Earth-centered framework. The chart is symbolic rather than a claim that Earth is physically the center of the solar system.

Why It Matters

Knowing that a chart is geocentric helps ensure that placements and timing techniques are compared within the same reference system. Heliocentric charts calculate positions from the Sun’s perspective and can produce notably different configurations, so the two approaches should not be mixed unintentionally. Confirming the chart type is especially useful when studying transits, progressions, or specialized software settings. The geocentric framework does not create a prediction by itself; it provides the coordinate system through which astrologers organize and interpret planetary symbolism.
