Malefic

Definition

In classical astrology, a malefic is a planet traditionally associated with difficulty, conflict, loss, delay, or pressure. Mars and Saturn are known as the two malefics: Mars tends to signify heat, severance, haste, and strife, while Saturn signifies cold, restriction, scarcity, and endurance. The label describes a planet’s customary mode of action, not an inevitably harmful outcome.

Astrological Meaning

A malefic’s expression depends on its condition and context. Sign placement, house position, aspects, rulership, essential dignity, and sect can strengthen, moderate, or redirect its effects. In traditional sect doctrine, Saturn generally operates more constructively in a daytime chart, while Mars is often more manageable in a nighttime chart. Well-placed malefics may indicate discipline, courage, strategic restraint, resilience, or the ability to confront demanding circumstances. When strained, they may correspond with frustration, excessive force, fear, obstacles, or conflict.

Why It Matters

Understanding malefics helps astrologers identify where a chart may require effort, boundaries, patience, or decisive action. The term should not be treated as a verdict of misfortune. Instead, it highlights challenging planetary functions and the constructive capacities that can develop through them. Comparing malefics with benefics also gives a more balanced view of support, tension, opportunity, and responsibility in a natal chart or timing technique.
