Combust

Definition

Combust is a traditional astrological condition in which a planet is positioned very close to the Sun and is considered overwhelmed by its light. The exact distance used varies among classical authorities, but combustion is usually distinguished from the broader condition known as “under the beams.” A planet extremely close to the Sun may instead be cazimi, a condition traditionally interpreted as strengthening rather than obscuring it.

Astrological Meaning

A combust planet may have difficulty expressing its usual qualities openly, independently, or consistently. Its functions can become closely bound to solar themes such as identity, authority, purpose, recognition, or visibility. Interpretation depends on the planet involved, the degree of proximity, the sign and house placement, rulerships, aspects, and whether the chart is natal, horary, or electional. Some traditional systems also modify the condition according to whether the planet is approaching or separating from the Sun.

Why It Matters

Combustion adds important context to planetary strength in traditional chart interpretation. It does not mean that a planet is absent or destined to fail; rather, its influence may operate under pressure, behind the scenes, or through the priorities represented by the Sun. Comparing combustion with dignity, reception, house position, and supportive aspects produces a more balanced judgment than treating it as an isolated negative indication.
