Cazimi

Definition

Cazimi is a traditional astrological condition in which a planet is extremely close to the Sun’s center, described as being “in the heart of the Sun.” The customary limit is about 17 arcminutes of longitude, although some astrologers use wider boundaries or also consider latitude. Unlike combustion, which generally signifies that a planet is obscured by the Sun, cazimi has traditionally been treated as a position of unusual dignity or protection.

Astrological Meaning

A cazimi planet may express its symbolism with exceptional concentration, visibility, or authority. Its concerns become closely aligned with solar themes such as purpose, identity, leadership, and conscious direction. Interpretation still depends on the planet, sign, house, aspects, sect, and whether the chart is natal, horary, electional, or mundane. Mercury cazimi, for example, can emphasize focused thought or communication, while Venus cazimi may concentrate questions of relationship, values, diplomacy, or aesthetics. This condition does not erase difficult aspects or guarantee favorable outcomes.

Why It Matters

Cazimi matters because a very small difference in planetary distance can change a traditional judgment. A planet near the Sun might be classified as under the beams, combust, or cazimi, with each condition carrying a distinct meaning. Accurate chart data and careful measurement are therefore important. In a natal chart, cazimi can identify a highly concentrated life theme; in forecasting, it may mark a brief period when a planet’s topics become especially prominent or clarified.
