Conjunction, Superior and Inferior
Definition
Superior and inferior conjunctions are two forms of the Sun’s conjunction with Mercury or Venus, the planets whose orbits lie inside Earth’s orbit. At an inferior conjunction, the planet passes between Earth and the Sun. At a superior conjunction, it is positioned on the far side of the Sun from Earth. These terms describe astronomical geometry, not whether the conjunction is favorable or unfavorable.
Astrological Meaning
An inferior conjunction usually occurs while Mercury or Venus is retrograde and marks a transition from evening-star visibility to morning-star visibility. Astrologers may interpret it as an inward, reflective, or renewing phase in the planet’s synodic cycle. A superior conjunction occurs while the planet is direct and marks the reverse transition, often associated with culmination, clarification, or outward expression. If the conjunction is extremely close, traditional conditions such as cazimi or combustion may also apply, depending on the orb and interpretive system. The planet, sign, house, and aspects remain essential to the reading.
Why It Matters
Distinguishing these conjunctions adds context that a simple Sun–Mercury or Sun–Venus aspect does not provide. In natal work, the distinction can help describe how mental, relational, or value-oriented themes are processed and expressed. In transit work, it helps locate a moment within Mercury’s or Venus’s repeating cycle rather than treating every solar conjunction as equivalent. Accurate interpretation requires checking planetary motion and position in an ephemeris or chart calculation.
