Topocentric Chart

Definition

A Topocentric Chart is calculated from the observer’s exact location on Earth rather than solely from Earth’s center. In practice, “topocentric” may refer to planetary positions adjusted for local parallax, especially the Moon, or to the Topocentric house system developed by Wendel Polich and A. Page Nelson. These are related but distinct calculation choices.

Astrological Meaning

Topocentric calculations can slightly change a planet’s apparent position because the viewing point is the Earth’s surface. The effect is usually most noticeable for the nearby Moon and can matter when a body is close to a sign boundary, house cusp, or exact aspect. When the Topocentric house system is selected, the chart’s house cusps may differ from those produced by Placidus, Whole Sign, or other systems, potentially shifting the life areas emphasized in interpretation.

Why It Matters

This approach offers astrologers a location-specific alternative for natal and predictive work. Small differences may become relevant in tightly timed techniques, but they do not automatically make one chart more accurate than another. It is useful to record whether topocentric coordinates, Topocentric houses, or both were used and to apply the chosen method consistently. Comparing results with another calculation system can reveal which interpretive distinctions are meaningful without treating minor technical changes as decisive.
