Definition

Synthesis is the process of combining separate chart factors into one coherent astrological interpretation. Rather than reading planets, signs, houses, aspects, and dignities as isolated symbols, the astrologer considers how they interact. The goal is to identify dominant patterns, supporting themes, and meaningful contradictions within the chart as a whole.

Astrological Meaning

In natal astrology, synthesis may begin with the Ascendant, its ruler, the Sun, and the Moon before incorporating house emphasis, aspect patterns, planetary condition, and other relevant techniques. A placement can change in expression depending on its house, aspects, rulerships, and relationship to the rest of the chart. Traditional astrology may give particular weight to sect, dignity, house strength, and planetary rulership, while modern approaches may emphasize psychological patterns. In either case, synthesis requires judgment about which factors deserve priority.

Why It Matters

Synthesis turns a list of astrological observations into a useful interpretation. It helps prevent one dramatic placement or difficult aspect from being treated as the entire story. By comparing repeated indications and balancing conflicting testimony, an astrologer can describe likely tendencies with greater nuance. Strong synthesis also keeps interpretation cautious: a chart suggests interacting potentials, conditions, and themes rather than a single fixed outcome.
