Ptolemaic Astrology is the astrological framework associated with Claudius Ptolemy, a second-century Alexandrian scholar whose Tetrabiblos became a foundational text in Western astrology. It presents astrology as a systematic study of celestial influences, drawing on planetary qualities, zodiac signs, aspects, rulerships, and the conditions surrounding a birth or event.
In this approach, planets are interpreted through combinations of traditional qualities such as hot, cold, moist, and dry. Their meanings are modified by zodiacal placement, relationship to the Sun, rulership, sect, and angular connections with other planets. Ptolemy emphasized major aspects based on whole-sign geometrical relationships: conjunctions, oppositions, trines, squares, and sextiles. He also used the tropical zodiac, linking its signs to the equinoxes and solstices. Modern astrologers may apply these principles selectively rather than reproducing the full historical method.
Ptolemaic Astrology matters because it shaped centuries of astrological theory in Europe, the Islamic world, and later Western traditions. Studying it helps clarify the origins of planetary symbolism, aspect doctrine, temperament analysis, and essential dignity. It also offers a disciplined way to weigh several chart factors together instead of treating one placement as decisive or inevitably predictive.
