Significator
Definition
A significator is a planet, point, house ruler, or other chart factor chosen to represent a particular person, subject, or area of life. Some significators are natural, such as the Moon’s association with caregiving and daily change. Others are assigned from the chart itself, such as the ruler of the seventh house representing a partner or opponent.
Astrological Meaning
The significator directs attention to the condition of the matter being studied. An astrologer may examine its sign, house, dignity, motion, aspects, and relationship with other relevant planets. In a natal chart, the ruler of a house can signify how that life area operates. In horary astrology, the ruler of the Ascendant commonly signifies the person asking the question, while another house ruler represents the subject. Electional and mundane astrology use significators according to their own established methods. Interpretation depends on context; no planet carries exactly the same meaning in every chart.
Why It Matters
Identifying the correct significator helps organize a chart and prevents unrelated symbolism from dominating the interpretation. It clarifies which planet speaks for whom or what, making relationships between chart factors easier to assess. Because different astrological traditions may assign significators differently, the method should be stated and applied consistently rather than treated as a fixed universal rule.
