Definition

Radical is a traditional astrological term meaning rooted, original, or belonging to the chart’s foundation. A radical chart, from the Latin radix meaning “root,” is commonly the natal chart from which later techniques are calculated. In horary astrology, “radical” may instead describe a chart considered suitable for judgment because it meaningfully reflects the question and its circumstances.

Astrological Meaning

When radical refers to a natal chart, it distinguishes birth placements from derived or temporary factors such as transits, progressions, directions, and return charts. These later charts are interpreted in relation to the radical positions. In horary practice, radicality concerns whether the chart accurately represents the question. Traditional astrologers may examine features such as the planetary hour, the Ascendant, or the condition of key significators, although methods vary. A caution against judgment does not automatically invalidate a chart; many practitioners treat it as contextual guidance rather than an absolute prohibition.

Why It Matters

Understanding this term prevents confusion when reading classical texts or using traditional methods. It clarifies which placements form the base chart and which indicate later developments. In horary astrology, it also encourages the astrologer to consider whether a question is sincere, timely, and clearly represented before offering an interpretation.
