In classical astrology, “whole” describes something treated as complete or undivided. The term appears most clearly in the whole-sign house system, where each entire zodiac sign serves as one house. The sign containing the Ascendant becomes the first house, and the signs that follow become the remaining houses in zodiacal order.

Astrological Meaning

Using whole signs separates houses from exact degree-based cusps. The Ascendant degree remains important as a sensitive point, but it does not mark the beginning of the first house. A planet belongs to a house according to its sign, so planets sharing a sign generally share a house. In broader traditional terminology, “whole” may also emphasize considering a sign, house, configuration, or chart as a complete unit rather than interpreting only one degree or isolated factor.

Why It Matters

Understanding this term helps prevent confusion when comparing house systems. A planet may occupy one house in a quadrant system and another by whole-sign houses, producing a different emphasis without necessarily invalidating either method. Astrologers should identify the system being used, then judge planets through sign, house, rulership, aspects, and condition together. The idea of wholeness also encourages synthesis: individual placements gain meaning from their relationship to the complete natal chart.
