COMMANDING

Definition

Commanding is a traditional astrological classification describing one sign’s relationship to another sign that follows a corresponding path on the opposite side of the zodiac. Classical authors associated the northern signs, from Aries through Virgo, with commanding, while the southern signs, from Libra through Pisces, were described as obeying. The distinction arose from astronomical conditions such as daylight length and the Sun’s seasonal movement.

Astrological Meaning

In interpretation, a commanding sign was considered stronger, more directive, or better able to set the terms of an interaction than its paired obeying sign. The corresponding pairs are generally Aries–Pisces, Taurus–Aquarius, Gemini–Capricorn, Cancer–Sagittarius, Leo–Scorpio, and Virgo–Libra. When planets occupy such paired signs, a traditional astrologer may treat the planet in the commanding sign as having greater influence over how the relationship between them is expressed. This is a secondary consideration rather than a complete judgment of planetary power.

Why It Matters

The concept adds nuance when comparing planets that are not connected by a standard major aspect but still share a recognized classical relationship. It can help clarify which planet appears more initiating or directive in a natal chart, horary question, or event chart. Its significance should be weighed alongside dignity, house placement, aspects, sect, reception, and the condition of each planet; commanding status alone does not ensure dominance or a particular outcome.
