Definition

Obeying is a traditional astrological classification associated with the six zodiac signs from Libra through Pisces. These were called obeying signs because they lie in the southern half of the zodiac and were contrasted with the commanding signs, Aries through Virgo. The concept belongs to older systems of sign relationships and does not imply literal submission or weakness.

Astrological Meaning

In classical interpretation, a planet in a commanding sign may be said to direct or prevail over a planet in an obeying sign when the two occupy corresponding signs equally distant from an equinoctial point. The traditional pairs are Aries–Pisces, Taurus–Aquarius, Gemini–Capricorn, Cancer–Sagittarius, Leo–Scorpio, and Virgo–Libra. Astrologers may use this relationship to assess precedence, influence, or responsiveness between planets. Planetary condition, house placement, aspects, and rulership still shape the result; the label alone does not determine behavior.

Why It Matters

The technique adds nuance when comparing planets in a natal chart, event chart, or relationship analysis. It can suggest which planetary agenda is more likely to set the tone and which may adapt, receive, or respond. Because this terminology reflects an older symbolic hierarchy, modern practitioners often interpret it as directional emphasis rather than personal dominance. It is most useful when integrated with the chart’s broader testimony instead of treated as an independent judgment.
