Definition

Boreal means northern. In classical astrological terminology, it most often describes the northern half of the zodiac: Aries through Virgo, whose signs lie mainly north of the celestial equator. The opposite term is austral, meaning southern, and usually referring to Libra through Pisces.

Astrological Meaning

Boreal signs were classified by their astronomical position rather than by element, modality, or personal temperament. Traditional astrologers sometimes associated them with northern declination, increasing daylight in the Northern Hemisphere, and related sign divisions such as commanding signs. These symbolic associations vary among astrological schools and should not replace examination of a planet’s sign, house, aspects, dignity, and actual declination. A planet in a boreal sign is therefore not automatically stronger, more fortunate, or more dominant.

Why It Matters

The term helps readers understand older astrological texts, where northern and southern zodiacal divisions may appear in discussions of mundane astrology, direction, seasonality, or planetary condition. It also clarifies the difference between zodiacal position and celestial declination: although the two are related, a planet’s measured declination should be checked directly. Because boreal symbolism reflects a Northern Hemisphere framework, astrologers working with Southern Hemisphere seasons may interpret its seasonal implications with additional care.
