Refranation

Definition

Refranation is a traditional astrological condition in which two planets are applying toward an exact aspect, but one changes direction before the aspect perfects. Most commonly, the applying planet turns retrograde and withdraws from the anticipated contact. The term is used especially in horary astrology to describe a potential connection that begins to form but does not reach completion.

Astrological Meaning

In horary interpretation, refranation may suggest hesitation, reversal, withdrawal, or a change of circumstances that prevents a matter from developing as expected. The planets involved identify the people, actions, or concerns represented, while their signs, houses, dignity, and receptions describe the surrounding context. Refranation does not automatically mean permanent failure; it can indicate delay, reconsideration, avoidance, or a decision to take another course. The chart should also be checked for later aspects, translation of light, collection of light, or other possible routes to perfection.

Why It Matters

Recognizing refranation helps an astrologer avoid treating every applying aspect as a completed promise. Exactness and planetary motion are crucial in traditional judgment, particularly when assessing whether an event is likely to come together. Refranation also differs from prohibition or frustration: the aspect is prevented specifically by a change in planetary direction, rather than by another planet intervening first.
