Relative Houses

Definition

Relative Houses are houses interpreted by counting from another house rather than from the Ascendant. Also called derived or turned houses, they describe matters belonging to a person or topic represented by the starting house. For example, the second house from the seventh can signify a partner’s money because the seventh represents the partner and the following house represents that person’s resources.

Astrological Meaning

To use relative houses, identify the house governing the main subject, treat it temporarily as the first house, and count forward to the desired topic. A parent’s siblings, a child’s career, or a partner’s home can therefore be examined through houses derived from the relevant significator. The resulting house is interpreted through its sign, planetary ruler, occupants, and aspects. Traditional practice may also consider planetary condition and relevant timing techniques. Because house assignments differ among astrological schools, the chosen framework should be applied consistently and supported by the wider chart.

Why It Matters

Relative houses allow one natal chart or event chart to reveal relationships among connected people and circumstances. They add precision when a question concerns someone else’s possessions, work, family, or experiences. This method is most useful as one interpretive layer, not as a basis for rigid conclusions or certain predictions.
