Prohibition

Definition

Prohibition is a traditional astrological condition in which an applying aspect between two relevant planets is prevented from perfecting because another planet intervenes first. The term is used chiefly in horary astrology, where planets act as significators for the people, objects, or circumstances involved in a question.

Astrological Meaning

When significators apply toward an aspect, they may suggest that two parties or developments are moving toward contact. If a third planet perfects an aspect with one of them before their own aspect becomes exact, it may prohibit the anticipated connection. Interpretation depends on which planet intervenes, what houses it rules, its condition, and the kinds of aspects involved. Some traditional authorities define prohibition more narrowly than others, so astrologers may also compare it with frustration, refranation, abscission of light, and translation of light.

Why It Matters

Prohibition helps an astrologer judge whether an apparent promise in a horary chart can actually reach completion. Rather than automatically indicating permanent failure, it can describe interference, a competing obligation, another person’s involvement, delay, or changed circumstances. The whole chart remains important: reception, dignity, timing, later aspects, and supporting testimonies may show whether the matter is merely obstructed or redirected. In natal work, prohibition is not usually treated as a standard standalone technique, although its underlying symbolism may inform astrologers using traditional methods.
