Reception

Definition

Reception is a traditional astrological condition in which one planet occupies a sign where another planet has dignity, such as rulership or exaltation. The dignified planet is said to receive the visiting planet. When both planets occupy each other’s dignities, the arrangement is called mutual reception. Reception is distinct from an aspect, although the two conditions may occur together.

Astrological Meaning

Reception describes the relationship between planets and can show whether one planet has the resources, authority, or willingness to support another. Its interpretation depends on the type of dignity involved, the planets’ condition, their houses, and whether an applying aspect connects them. Reception by rulership is generally considered stronger than reception through lesser dignities. In horary astrology, it may describe interest, cooperation, dependence, or unequal investment between the people and matters represented by the planets. In natal work, it can reveal how two planetary functions interact and whether one helps channel the other constructively.

Why It Matters

Reception adds nuance that aspects alone may not provide. A difficult aspect accompanied by strong reception can suggest cooperation despite tension, while an easy aspect without reception may offer contact but limited commitment or support. Because traditions differ over the strength and requirements of reception, it should be judged within a consistent method and alongside the whole chart rather than treated as a guarantee of results.
