Mutual reception occurs when two planets occupy signs or dignities governed by one another. A common example is Venus in Aries and Mars in Taurus: Venus is in Mars’s sign, while Mars is in Venus’s sign. Traditional astrologers may also consider reciprocal reception through exaltation, triplicity, terms, or faces, although methods vary by school.

Astrological Meaning

This relationship links the planets and suggests that each has access to the other’s resources, priorities, or authority. In a natal chart, the topics represented by the planets and the houses they rule may become closely interdependent. In horary or electional astrology, mutual reception can show cooperation, assistance, or a route toward resolution. Its effectiveness depends on the planets’ condition, the type of dignity involved, and whether they form an applying aspect. Reception by domicile is generally considered stronger than reception through a minor dignity. Mutual reception does not automatically erase debility or difficult aspects; instead, it describes a meaningful channel between the planets.
