Definition

“Under the rays” is a traditional astrological condition in which a planet is close enough to the Sun to be obscured by its light, but not necessarily close enough to be combust. Astrologers usually measure this proximity by zodiacal longitude. The exact boundary varies by tradition, commonly extending to about 15 or 17 degrees from the Sun, while combustion uses a narrower range.

Astrological Meaning

A planet under the Sun’s rays may have difficulty expressing its usual symbolism openly, independently, or visibly. Its concerns can become absorbed into solar themes such as identity, authority, purpose, recognition, or the affairs ruled by the Sun in the chart. This condition is generally considered less restrictive than combustion and very different from cazimi, where a planet extremely close to the Sun may receive special strength. Interpretation also depends on the planet’s sign, house, rulerships, aspects, and whether it is approaching or separating from the Sun.

Why It Matters

Recognizing a planet under the rays adds nuance to judgments about planetary strength and visibility. In a natal chart, it may describe qualities that operate privately or require conscious development. In electional and horary astrology, it can indicate a person or matter that is concealed, overshadowed, or not yet able to act freely. It should be weighed alongside dignity, reception, sect, and other chart conditions rather than treated as decisive by itself.
