Psychography

Definition

Psychography literally means a written description of the mind, character, or inner life. In astrological usage, it refers to a psychological portrait developed from a horoscope, especially a natal chart. The term is uncommon in modern astrology and does not denote one universally standardized method. In spiritualist contexts, psychography can instead mean automatic or mediumistic writing, a separate practice that should not be confused with chart interpretation.

Astrological Meaning

An astrological psychography brings multiple chart factors together to describe temperament, motivations, emotional patterns, and ways of relating. The Sun, Moon, Ascendant, Mercury, chart ruler, planetary aspects, houses, and element or modality emphasis may all contribute. Rather than treating one placement as a complete personality statement, the astrologer synthesizes supporting and conflicting indicators. Traditional approaches may emphasize temperament, planetary condition, and house rulership, while contemporary approaches often use more explicitly psychological language.

Why It Matters

Psychography matters because it frames natal interpretation as an integrated character study rather than a list of isolated placements. It can help organize a reading around recurring themes while leaving room for development, context, and personal choice. Because astrological symbols can describe several possible expressions, a responsible psychography remains interpretive rather than diagnostic or absolute. Comparing the written portrait with lived experience can make the reading more grounded and useful.
