A partial eclipse occurs when the Sun, Moon, and Earth align closely but not completely, leaving only part of the eclipsed body obscured from a given location. During a partial solar eclipse, the Moon covers part of the Sun. During a partial lunar eclipse, part of the Moon passes through Earth’s darker umbral shadow.
Astrologically, a partial eclipse is interpreted first as a lunation: a solar eclipse functions like an intensified New Moon, while a lunar eclipse resembles an intensified Full Moon. Its sign, degree, house placement, planetary ruler, and aspects describe the themes involved. Contact with natal planets or chart angles may make those themes more personally noticeable. Although some astrologers consider partial eclipses less concentrated than total eclipses, this does not automatically make them insignificant.
Partial eclipses can help identify periods when developing circumstances, incomplete information, or gradual turning points deserve attention. Their symbolism is best considered alongside the natal chart, current transits, and the wider eclipse cycle rather than treated as a guaranteed event. Reviewing what begins or becomes visible near the eclipse can support reflective, grounded interpretation.
