Phases are recurring stages within an astronomical cycle. In astrology, the term most commonly describes the changing angular relationship between the Sun and Moon, producing the lunar phases from New Moon through Full Moon and back again. Traditional astrologers may also examine a planet’s phase in relation to the Sun, including whether it rises before or after the Sun or is hidden by its light.

Astrological Meaning

A phase provides context for how a celestial body is thought to express its symbolism. Waxing lunar phases are generally associated with development, accumulation, and outward momentum, while waning phases suggest distribution, reflection, and completion. Planetary solar phases can indicate visibility, orientation, and condition. For example, a planet appearing as a morning star may be interpreted differently from the same planet appearing as an evening star. These distinctions modify interpretation rather than replacing the planet’s sign, house, aspects, or rulerships.

Why It Matters

Recognizing phases adds timing and developmental nuance to chart interpretation. In a natal chart, the Moon’s phase can describe the broader relationship between conscious purpose and instinctive response. In traditional practice, planetary phases help assess how readily a planet’s qualities may become evident. Because phase is only one factor, it is best considered alongside the complete chart rather than treated as a fixed prediction.
