Definition

A phase is a distinct stage within an astronomical cycle. In astrology, the term most often describes the changing angular relationship between two celestial bodies, especially the Moon and Sun. Traditional astrologers may also use phase for a planet’s changing relationship to the Sun, including periods of visibility, invisibility, heliacal rising, and heliacal setting.

Astrological Meaning

Phase provides context for interpreting how a planetary cycle unfolds. Lunar phases—from the New Moon through the Full Moon and back—symbolize emergence, development, culmination, release, and renewal. A natal Moon’s phase can therefore suggest a person’s characteristic way of engaging with growth and transition. Planetary phases may indicate whether a planet is beginning a cycle, moving toward maximum expression, completing a process, or becoming obscured by the Sun. In classical practice, solar visibility could also affect assessments of a planet’s condition, prominence, and manner of expression.

Why It Matters

Recognizing phase prevents a planet from being interpreted in isolation. Two charts may contain the same planets and signs while expressing them differently because the bodies occupy different stages of their cycles. Phase adds timing, sequence, and developmental nuance to natal interpretation, transit work, electional astrology, and traditional techniques. It describes symbolic tendencies rather than guaranteeing specific events or outcomes.
