Natal Astrology
Definition
Natal astrology is the branch of astrology concerned with interpreting a birth chart, also called a natal chart. The chart maps the positions of the Sun, Moon, planets, angles, and other selected points for a person’s date, time, and place of birth. It is read as a symbolic picture of the sky at that moment rather than as a literal prediction of an unchangeable fate.
Astrological Meaning
A natal astrologer considers how planets operate through zodiac signs, houses, aspects, and chart rulerships. The Sun may describe identity and purpose, the Moon emotional habits, and the Ascendant one’s approach to experience. No placement stands alone: its sign suggests style, its house indicates an area of life, and its aspects show relationships with other chart factors. Traditional and modern schools may use different techniques or emphasize different meanings.
Why It Matters
Natal astrology provides the foundation for many forms of personal chart interpretation. It can offer language for examining temperament, motivations, recurring patterns, strengths, and areas requiring conscious development. The birth chart also serves as the reference point for timing methods such as transits, progressions, profections, and solar returns. Its value lies less in assigning fixed traits than in supporting reflection and showing how several symbolic tendencies may interact within one life.
