Meridional means southern or relating to the meridian, the north–south great circle that passes through the zenith and the celestial poles. The word derives from the Latin for midday or south. In older astrological and astronomical texts, it may describe a southern location, direction, latitude, declination, or region of the heavens. Its precise sense therefore depends on the author’s coordinate system and historical context.

Astrological Meaning

In chart interpretation, meridional language is usually descriptive rather than a stand-alone symbolic factor. It may identify a planet positioned south of the celestial equator, a point associated with the southern meridian, or the southern portion of a particular diagram. This should not automatically be equated with being below the horizon, in the lower hemisphere of a natal chart, or in southern zodiac signs; those are different measurements. Traditional sources may attach interpretive weight to celestial direction, angularity, latitude, or declination, but each factor must be evaluated according to the technique being used.

Recognizing this term helps readers interpret classical tables, chart instructions, and translated texts without confusing several kinds of “south.” Before drawing a conclusion, determine whether meridional refers to geographic latitude, celestial declination, the local meridian, or chart placement.
