Meridian Distance is the angular distance between a celestial body’s hour circle and the local celestial meridian. It is measured along the celestial equator, usually in degrees or hours, and may be identified as east or west of the meridian. Closely related to hour angle, it describes how far a planet or point has moved from an upper or lower meridian crossing at a specific time and location.
In traditional and technical astrology, Meridian Distance helps establish a planet’s mundane position: its placement relative to the horizon, meridian, and house framework rather than only its zodiacal longitude. It can be used in certain house calculations, primary directions, and methods that assess a planet’s movement toward or away from an angle. A small distance from the upper meridian may indicate proximity to the Midheaven, although declination, latitude, and the chosen calculation system must also be considered.
Meridian Distance matters because two planets with similar zodiacal positions can occupy different relationships to the local angles. This measurement helps astrologers distinguish celestial longitude from location-based chart position and supports more precise work with angularity and directional techniques. Its interpretation is therefore contextual: it refines chart geometry but does not, by itself, determine a planet’s strength, outcome, or meaning.
