Lunation

Definition

A lunation is the cycle formed by the changing angular relationship between the Sun and Moon, measured from one New Moon to the next. The term may also refer to a particular phase within that cycle, especially a New Moon or Full Moon. One complete lunation lasts about 29.5 days.

Astrological Meaning

Astrologers interpret the lunation cycle as a pattern of emergence, development, culmination, and release. A New Moon may symbolize beginnings or the planting of intentions, while the waxing phases suggest growth and increasing visibility. The Full Moon often emphasizes culmination, awareness, or tension between opposing needs. Waning phases are commonly associated with evaluation, adjustment, and closure. Interpretation depends on the zodiac signs, houses, aspects, and planets involved. A natal lunation describes the Sun–Moon phase at birth; a current lunation is a transiting cycle considered in relation to the natal chart or collective events.

Why It Matters

Lunations provide a practical framework for tracking short-term astrological timing and recurring emotional rhythms. They can highlight areas receiving temporary emphasis without guaranteeing specific outcomes. Studying the cycle as a whole also prevents isolated New or Full Moons from being interpreted without context.
