Lunation, Embolismic

Definition

An embolismic lunation is an additional lunation occurring within a solar-year framework. A lunation is the cycle from one New Moon to the next, lasting about 29.5 days. Because twelve lunations total roughly 354 days—about eleven days shorter than a solar year—some years contain a thirteenth lunation. In lunisolar calendars, an intercalary or “embolismic” month may be inserted to keep lunar months aligned with the seasons.

Astrological Meaning

In astrology, the term primarily describes calendar structure rather than a universally recognized chart influence. Traditional astrologers working with lunar calendars, annual cycles, or historical dates may note an embolismic lunation when coordinating lunar phases with the solar year. Its interpretation still depends on ordinary lunation factors: the zodiac sign and degree of the New Moon, planetary aspects, house placement, location, and the chart being examined. The extra lunation does not automatically carry favorable or unfavorable meaning.

Why It Matters

Understanding embolismic lunations helps clarify why lunar and solar calendars periodically diverge and how older astrological records were organized. It can also prevent confusion with modern labels such as a second New Moon in a calendar month. For practical interpretation, the lunation’s chart and context are more informative than its status as the thirteenth lunation alone.
