A lunar year is a period of twelve lunar months, usually measured from one New Moon to the next. Because each synodic month lasts about 29.5 days, a lunar year contains roughly 354 days—about eleven days fewer than a solar year. Lunisolar calendars periodically add an extra month to keep lunar months aligned with the seasons.
In astrology, the lunar year provides a framework for following recurring Moon cycles and their relationship to personal or collective timing. It may be used when working with lunar calendars, monthly lunations, eclipses, or traditional systems that organize time by the Moon. Its interpretation depends on the technique being applied; a lunar year is not the same as a solar return, a lunar return, or a calendar year measured by the Sun.
Understanding the lunar year helps prevent confusion when comparing astrological timing methods. A technique based on twelve lunations will gradually shift against the seasonal solar calendar unless adjusted. This distinction is especially useful in traditional astrology and historical calendar studies, where lunar, solar, and lunisolar systems may coexist. The lunar year offers symbolic emphasis on rhythm, renewal, and changing conditions rather than a fixed prediction.
