Definition

In traditional astrology, a face is a ten-degree division of a zodiac sign, also called a decan. Because every sign contains thirty degrees, each has three faces, each assigned to a planet. The traditional rulers follow the repeating Chaldean order of Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, the Sun, Venus, Mercury, and the Moon, beginning with Mars in the first face of Aries.

Astrological Meaning

A planet occupying a face it rules possesses a minor form of essential dignity. This suggests that the planet has some limited ability to express its nature appropriately, although the support is weaker than rulership, exaltation, or triplicity. Face can add nuance when assessing planetary condition, especially when stronger dignities are absent. Its interpretation should be combined with sign, house, aspects, sect, and accidental dignity rather than treated as a decisive factor by itself.

Why It Matters

Face helps astrologers make finer distinctions between planets that otherwise appear similarly placed. A planet in its own face may have a modest degree of familiarity or competence within that narrow part of the zodiac. In natal, horary, and electional work, this dignity can slightly strengthen interpretation, but it rarely outweighs major chart factors. Studying faces also connects modern decan symbolism with the structured dignity system of traditional astrology.
