Configuration

Definition

A configuration is an organized relationship among planets, angles, or other chart factors. In modern astrology, the term often describes a recognizable aspect pattern, such as a Grand Trine, T-square, or Yod. In traditional astrology, planets may be described as configured when they behold one another through a recognized aspect, especially a conjunction, sextile, square, trine, or opposition.

Astrological Meaning

Interpreting a configuration involves more than identifying its shape. The astrologer considers the planets involved, the signs and houses they occupy, the exactness and condition of their aspects, and whether any planet dominates or helps resolve the pattern. Harmonious aspects may indicate easier cooperation among the factors, while challenging aspects can describe tension that encourages effort, adaptation, or development. A configuration does not operate separately from the rest of the chart: planetary dignity, rulership, sect, angularity, and connections to the Ascendant or Midheaven may substantially alter its expression.

Why It Matters

Configurations help astrologers see how several chart components work as a system rather than as isolated placements. They can highlight recurring motivations, concentrated areas of attention, and possible ways that different needs support or complicate one another. Their importance should be judged within the whole chart, not assumed from the pattern’s name alone.
