Vulcan

Definition

Vulcan is the name given to a hypothetical planet once believed to orbit between Mercury and the Sun. Nineteenth-century astronomers proposed it to explain irregularities in Mercury’s orbit, but the planet was never confirmed; Einstein’s theory of general relativity later accounted for those observations. Vulcan is therefore not a recognized astronomical body or a standard planet in classical astrology.

Astrological Meaning

When astrologers use Vulcan, its meaning depends on the system being followed. Some esoteric traditions treat it as a symbolic or hidden influence associated with forging, purification, focused will, and the reshaping of values through sustained pressure. It may also be linked with Taurus in certain esoteric rulership schemes. These ideas belong to modern metaphysical astrology rather than the established planetary framework of traditional astrology. Vulcan should not be confused with Vulcanus, a separate hypothetical factor used in Uranian astrology.

Why It Matters

Understanding Vulcan helps readers distinguish historical astronomical speculation from later astrological symbolism. If it appears in a chart interpretation, the astrologer should explain the calculation method, rulership system, and interpretive tradition being used. Because there is no universally accepted position or meaning for Vulcan, it is best treated as an optional symbolic layer rather than a substitute for the planets, angles, houses, and aspects supported by the chosen astrological system.
